Coastal Areas in North and South Carolina Under Coastal Flood Advisory and Rip Current Risk
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued Coastal Flood Advisories and Rip Current Warnings for various coastal areas in North and South Carolina. The alerts are in effect until Friday afternoon, with impacts expected in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways.
In Coastal Pender County, Coastal Georgetown County, Coastal New Hanover County, and Coastal Brunswick County, residents and visitors should be aware of potential coastal flooding and dangerous rip currents. The advisories warn of one to two feet of inundation above ground level in low-lying areas, with a high risk of rip currents that can sweep swimmers away from shore into deeper water.
The NWS advises checking with local officials for any road closures or impacts, as causeways to and from local beaches may experience moderate coastal flooding and become impassable. Additionally, roadways and structures adjacent to ocean swashes may be impacted. The advisories also mention the possibility of longshore currents sweeping swimmers and surfers into rip currents, piers, jetties, and other hazardous areas.
These weather conditions are based on average tide conditions, and additional locations may experience flooding during periods of heavy rainfall, high winds, or other factors. The NWS urges residents and visitors to stay informed and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety during this period of heightened risk.
In a separate weather event, the NWS in Salt Lake City, Utah, issued a Flash Flood Warning due to estimated rainfall of between 0.5 and 1 inch within the Warm Creek Watershed. Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly, posing a life-threatening risk to the area. Residents in the affected locations should be vigilant and take appropriate measures to stay safe.
As extreme weather events become more frequent and severe, it is crucial for individuals and communities to stay informed, prepared, and resilient in the face of these challenges. By heeding official warnings and staying updated on weather developments, people can mitigate risks and protect themselves and their property.
