Coastal Virginia is currently facing a series of weather-related challenges, as indicated by several advisories issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Wakefield VA. The region is under a Coastal Flood Advisory, a Beach Hazards Statement, a High Surf Advisory, and a Coastal Flood Watch, all highlighting the potential risks and impacts of the ongoing weather conditions. The Coastal Flood Advisory, in effect until September 16 at 2:00 PM EDT, warns of up to one foot of inundation above ground level in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways in Surry, James City, Isle of Wight Counties, and several cities including Newport News, Hampton, Poquoson, and Suffolk. This could lead to road closures, property inundation, and shoreline erosion. Simultaneously, a Beach Hazards Statement and High Surf Advisory are in place for Virginia Beach, with a high risk of rip currents, large breaking waves, and dangerous swimming and surfing conditions. The Coastal Flood Watch extends the concerns to include the possibility of one to two feet of inundation above ground level in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways, exacerbating the existing risks. Accomack and Northampton Counties are under a High Surf Advisory, with large breaking waves of 7 to 9 feet expected in the surf zone, leading to rough surf conditions and a high risk of rip currents. Additionally, New Kent, Gloucester, Mathews, Eastern King William, Eastern King and Queen, and York Counties are under a Coastal Flood Advisory until September 16 at 11:00 PM EDT, with up to one foot of inundation expected in vulnerable areas near the waterfront and shoreline. Further south, Westmoreland, Richmond, Northumberland, Lancaster, Middlesex, Western Essex, and Eastern Essex Counties are under a Coastal Flood Advisory until September 17 at 2:00 AM EDT, with similar risks of shallow flooding in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways. These weather advisories underscore the importance of preparedness and vigilance in the face of changing weather conditions. Residents and authorities in Coastal Virginia are urged to stay informed, follow safety guidelines, and take necessary precautions to mitigate the potential impacts of the ongoing weather hazards. #CoastalVirginia #WeatherHazards #SafetyFirst #NexSouk #AIForGood References: - Coastal Flood Advisory: https://api.weather.gov/alerts/urn:oid:2.49.0.1.840.0.ea61416b1e3a567f0154c7d1577fbf90d5ce021a.003.1.cap - Beach Hazards Statement: https://api.weather.gov/alerts/urn:oid:2.49.0.1.840.0.ea61416b1e3a567f0154c7d1577fbf90d5ce021a.001.4.cap - High Surf Advisory: https://api.weather.gov/alerts/urn:oid:2.49.0.1.840.0.ea61416b1e3a567f0154c7d1577fbf90d5ce021a.007.1.cap - Coastal Flood Watch: https://api.weather.gov/alerts/urn:oid:2.49.0.1.840.0.ea61416b1e3a567f0154c7d1577fbf90d5ce021a.001.3.cap - Additional Coastal Flood Advisories: https://api.weather.gov/alerts/urn:oid:2.49.0.1.840.0.ea61416b1e3a567f0154c7d1577fbf90d5ce021a.005.1.cap, https://api.weather.gov/alerts/urn:oid:2.49.0.1.840.0.ea61416b1e3a567f0154c7d1577fbf90d5ce021a.006.1.cap, https://api.weather.gov/alerts/urn:oid:2.49.0.1.840.0.ea61416b1e3a567f0154c7d1577fbf90d5ce021a.004.1.cap Social Commentary influenced the creation of this article.
