Coastal Areas in Virginia and California Under Coastal Flood and Wind Advisories
As coastal areas in Virginia and California brace for adverse weather conditions, the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued Coastal Flood Advisories and Wind Advisories to alert residents and visitors of potential hazards.
In Virginia, Eastern Currituck County, Virginia Beach, and Northampton County are under a Coastal Flood Advisory until this afternoon. The advisory warns of up to one foot of inundation above ground level in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways, leading to shallow flooding and a high risk of rip currents. Dangerous swimming and surfing conditions are expected, with rough surf conditions due to breaking waves of 4 to 7 feet.
Simultaneously, a Beach Hazards Statement is in effect for Eastern Currituck County, highlighting a high risk of rip currents through this evening. The combination of rip currents and coastal flooding poses a significant threat to beachgoers and coastal residents.
In California, Lake Tahoe, Pyramid Lake, San Luis Obispo County Beaches, Santa Barbara County Central Coast Beaches, and Santa Ynez Valley are under Wind Advisories due to strong winds. Southwest winds of 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 35 mph are expected at Lake Tahoe and Pyramid Lake, while northwest winds of 15 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph are forecasted for the mentioned California regions. Small boats, kayaks, and paddle boards are advised to remain off lake waters, and residents are cautioned about potential power outages and falling tree limbs.
The NWS has also issued a Coastal Flood Watch for Southwest Suffolk County in New York, with one to three feet of inundation above ground level possible in vulnerable areas near the waterfront and shoreline from Sunday morning through Monday afternoon. Widespread flooding of roads, parking lots, and homes near the waterfront is anticipated.
These weather advisories serve as crucial warnings for residents and visitors to take necessary precautions to ensure their safety and minimize property damage. It is essential to stay informed about changing weather conditions and follow guidance from local authorities.
