The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) in the United Kingdom has opened a five-month authorization window for crypto firms, allowing them to apply for FCA authorization ahead of the new crypto regulatory regime set to start on October 25, 2027. The FCA began accepting applications on September 30, 2026, with a deadline for submissions set for February 28, 2027.
Under the new regulatory framework, crypto businesses operating in the UK will need to obtain full authorization from the FCA to conduct regulated crypto asset activities. This move aims to provide consumers with greater protections and offer firms a clear framework to operate within the crypto industry.
Existing anti-money laundering (AML) registrations and other regulatory permissions held by crypto companies will not automatically convert into full FCA authorizations. Firms will need to demonstrate compliance with the FCA's regulatory expectations, including areas such as financial crime controls, consumer protection, senior management accountability, and operational resilience.
According to Dominic Cashman, Director of Authorisations at the FCA, a strong application that clearly defines the operating model, products offered, customer segments, and funding sources is essential for firms seeking FCA authorization. The FCA will review applications in the order received, and firms that fail to meet the necessary standards may not be authorized to operate in the UK.
To prevent disruption to existing businesses, firms that submit their applications by the February deadline will be allowed to continue operating even if the FCA has not yet made a decision on their applications. However, firms that miss the deadline may face interruptions to their operations until full authorization is granted.
The new regulatory regime will bring a broader range of crypto activities within the FCA's regulatory perimeter, including trading platforms, intermediaries, custodians, stablecoin issuers, and firms involved in staking. Activity-specific requirements will cover areas such as best execution, custody and safeguarding, stablecoin backing, prudential resources, and market abuse.
In conclusion, the FCA's decision to open a five-month authorization window for UK crypto firms marks a significant step towards enhancing regulatory oversight and consumer protection in the crypto industry. Firms operating in the UK should take proactive steps to apply for FCA authorization to ensure compliance with the new regulatory regime.
